Bob: You can make a virtual server at my house. I need beer or RAM money.

Brian: Good recommendation. There is no LAMP meta-package. It's an install profile ~only~, which sucks. I think there used to be one, but not since Gutsy.

If you were starting from bare metal the easiest way would be to use the Ubuntu Server CD and choose the LAMP configuration. Starting clean, you also know that you have no other background services running that you may have installed if you setup a desktop configuration. That said, it's not that hard to manually setup the packages, which should be simply installing the Apache (apache2), MySQL (mysql 5), and PHP (php5) meta packages using apt-get or Synaptic; heck, I haven't checked but there may even be a LAMP meta package that takes care of all three. There are other meta packages if your site uses something other than PHP.

Assuming you're setting your box up at home, you'll probably need to setup a dynamic DNS service if you want to use a domain name, otherwise, you can just as easily use the IP address. Some ISPs assign a domain name to you which you can lookup via nslookup. You just have to configure Apache to respond to either a domain name and/or an IP address. You'll also need to configure port forwarding if you're behind a router, but if you lock down the box, you could also just put it in the DMZ.

Of course when testing, you're going to want use a remote machine because any requests from your home will be routed on the local network.

What does this take?

All the websites I maintain are currently hosted in a quality-oriented shared hosting situation. I have need to run some tests in a dedicated situation to compare website speed performance (or possibly an environment which is sparingly accessed) with the shared hosting.

Q1: I have 2 Ubuntu Linux computers at home. What would be involved in setting up one so that I could run the tests and the internet would follow a common bath through the Qwest or other network to legitimize performance.

Q2: Depending on one above, does anyone have an environment already set up where I can set up a demo website using SSH (will need access to set up a MySQL database); a modest stipend is doable, a very tall beer, a little more...
