Ugh.  I hope distros turn that off in their packages.  That's what 
apt-get is for.

Speaking of annoying startup behavior, it seems that rpm stats all 
mounted directories when you ask it to install an rpm.  So at work we 
see it hang because of NFS mounts that aren't available anymore.  Seems 
stupid.
