help'd a friend load ubuntu 9.04 on her HP Pavilion notebook :)

UNFORTUNATELY she's UNABLE 2 suck-cessfully utilize OpenOffice 3.0 :(

when she try's 2 import a MS Word *.dot file, the screen  
DETERIORATE's :(

ANY idea's/solutions?!?!?!?!?
