Wait, what? Nagios "free version"? Is that a service from them, or
something? I have nagios installed on at least three systems,
monitoring hundreds of hosts, services, etc - so you might need to
clarify what you mean by 'free version for monitoring up to 7 hosts'.

At any rate, I use nagios, and it is lovely. I also use munin to graph
various services (tracking counts of things, etc)

Groundworks ( http://www.groundworkopensource.com/ ) has a suite of
tools that includes nagios, but it's a bit difficult to wrap your head
around at first - and it is really, really CPU/Memory intensive when
compared to normal nagios. (I had it running on a celeron 2 GHz, 4GB
RAM, and it ran like a dog. Swapped that out with a core2 duo 1.8GHz
with 4GB of PC2-5300 RAM, and now it flies.)
