I don't know about your installer.  Ubuntu isn't it?

With the Debian installer you can do various recovery things.  Rather than Knoppix I would boot the 
installer and then skip ahead to the "set up grub" step and try that.  The installer should already 
know how to make grub work without having to jump through chroot hoops.
