[clue-tech] Request for book recommendations

My dad has successfully installed Ubuntu on two of his desktops in a Windows
dual-boot configuration, but is still running into problems when using Ubuntu.
He has no problems using the command line having used CPM and DOS in the past.
However, he's unfamiliar with Linux commands and what they do. For those
seeking a fundamental understanding of Linux, LFS is one path. Even though he's
retired, he does not have the time to devote to LFS, yet. So what are some
books that would help him jump start his understanding of Ubuntu, Linux, and
bash? Bonus points if the book is short-to-read and has easy-to-follow,
practical examples.

Just to give an example, he had trouble setting up his wireless. While
troubleshooting he was sent on wild goose chases (e.g., compile and install a
driver from source), when everything was actually working. Ubuntu's network
manager in the system tray handles both ethernet and wireless connections and a
person coming from Windows expects those two connections to be managed
separately. So my father was unaware to click the icon to see the available
SSIDs. Plus launching the network connections application from the main menu,
there's no button to get a list of available SSIDs, a major oversight.

But it's good to know that Linux has finally advanced far enough for my dad to
start using it regularly.
