I'd recommend RUTE. It isn't short, but rather thorough. It has easy to follow examples. It was
written for someone coming to UNIX from DOS, primarily command line. It's easy to read (I like the
author's style) and has a quote at the beginning I've found valuable.
The only downside is that it's somewhat dated. So I think it says nothing about wireless and you'd
skip the kernel chapter. Likewise it probably doesn't cover modules (well, maybe) or udev.
You can read it on-line so you can decide how useful the good parts are.
There's a Ubuntu book on-line too: http://www.ubuntupocketguide.com/index_main.html. It looks nice
but I don't know how useful it is (or how current).
There are lots of general books about what UNIX is good for, from the fundamental _UNIX Programming
Environment_ to the armadillo book and Barbie's guide to Linux (Nemeth et. al.).
That's what I have to offer, from asking the same question over the years.
Dave
