[clue] Xserver advice?

Hi.  Seeking some xserver advice.   I've got a system that's having
seemingly random (I know they're happening for a reason and not truly
random) xorg crashes

My xlog file is @ http://pastebin.com/9jsJE8mw

Checking around - looking for clues.   None this far.
The really peculiar thing =

x -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf   works just fine.  Launches the server.

However when I try startx or xinit, it crashes.  Not sure how to debug, so
soliciting advice.
