I don't believe that there is a VMWare version that is Open Source. There
is a version (actually several) that is "free" (gratis). However, it
sounds like you have installed a version that is a non-free (in any sense)
product.
I actually use VirtualBox, which is "free" in all senses (although there is
a proprietary plugin that provides some additional functionality.) I believe
that VirtualBox can play VMWare machine images (although you may have to
run it through a conversion of some sort..), so this may be a reasonable path
for you to take.
