Interesting, potentially relevant, side note:

The marketing guys and business types won the storage-unit naming fight. Megabytes (MB) have a million bytes in them, gigabytes (GB) have a billion. Us tech guys have been relegated to using Mebibytes (MiB, binary megabytes) and Gibibytes (GiB, binary gigabytes).
