I may have remembered that wrong.  I think it was their Isam tables, as 
I had to change their innodb_file_per_table to be 1, but the point 
remains, it was the recommended approach.

Their database grows quickly they only have 1TB mounts and there was no 
LVM setup so they have no choice but to split across multiple drives.
