I LOL'ed :)

honestly, that 'omg, must compile!' culture that gentoo spawned, never
stood right with me.. especially because it's mostly espoused by people
who've never written a lick of code in their life.

I'm probably not the first to make this comparison, but the mentality
seems to align closely to the sort of person who puts a three-foot-rise
spoiler on the back of a honda civic, plastered in stickers for engine
parts they can't afford...

Frankly, as someone who built his first linux box from scratch on kernel
0.97, I'm quite glad the days of compiling *everything* are long behind
me. the debian .deb repositories are voluminous and well-QA'ed, and
aside from specific security-related tools these days, pretty much
anything you want is an apt-get away... unless I want to change some
compilation settings, in which case it's an apt-get source, edit
./debian/rules, apt-get -b source away.

Uncompromised convenience is a beautiful thing.
