I was thinking closer to $1000 (I'm wildly guessing) to be safe. A
chunk of change definitely but in all honesty, I think it would be worth
it.

Allow me to be the first rock thrower. :)

Video conferencing is definitely better than an after-the-fact
recording, but it's nowhere near as good as face-to-face in-person.

The feel is different, the excitement is different, the feeling of
belonging to the project is different. Lorin was curious about how to
get involved in larger open source projects. That feeling of connecting
with folks is a big part of that, and that comes much better from
face-to-face than a telecon.

If I may get on a soapbox here....

We're the Denver LUG. We are the largest city in this part of the
country, a national technical hub (believe it or not), _the_ hub in this
part of the country*. As such, we should have a killer LUG with
awesome speakers. The local guys, such as David, who are gutsy enough
to present in front of people, are great. But I also want non-local
technical people who are out in the community doing great stuff to
present. The github presentation at BLUG is the perfect exactly. Next
month's Tahoe presentation (CLUE's and BLUG's) is another great example.

Mike Bean brought up a really good point a while back. Why are there no
open source conferences in Denver? Apparently no one is interested
enough to make it happen. Well, consider this my attempt at helping to
make Denver a geek hub that would welcome a linux/OSS conference.

We raised $90 in one night at CLUE to pay for hosting. and there were
only ~12 of us. You're telling me we can't scrape together enough
money over the course of several months to pay for a presentation like this?

</soapbox>

*Austin and Phoenix are good too but due to the climate they have a much
harder time attracting folks than Denver does.
