[clue] Computer purchase 2 questions

1)
With big box stores, is there any advantage to purchasing local?
If the computer breaks down, am I going to have to mail it in, or
otherwise sit and wait; OR will they take it back over-the-counter,
for a replacement?
Thinking of Office supply stores with Lenovo or Acer, etc?

2)
Are there new desk top computers that are very small and portable,
approaching the portability of a laptop?
I googled for this, but did not find results, wrong word choice, maybe.
