Meetup is tricky. It's a good promotional platform, but you want to make
sure that you move your members to something else for ongoing communication
and whatnot. They have no API available for setting up systems for
cross-posting or getting member information out. I'm working with a group
to get a maker space going on the west side of town (we need more people!
http://www.meetup.com/West-Metro-Makerspace/ ), and it has come up that
many of the existing maker spaces would like to move away from meetup.com
now (presumably it's gotten expensive) but doing so would be very painful
and disruptive because of how locked-in their membership has become.
