[clue] odd HDMI behavior

I think my monitor has higher resolution.   And i did have a graphical login screen that seemed to have the right resolution.   Trying to switch to an alternate screen didn't work either. 

I'll try again and see if Arch Linux also. Has a problem.

Maybe the monitor at work is capable of a higher resolution (1080p) than the one at home (720p or 480p) and once it switches up to the higher one it won't go back down?
