Admins

I'm trying to get speakers lined up for August 10. I've made contact with a
couple of possibles, but have not been able to get them to confirm. Any
ideas or volunteers?

Also, I'm not sure how to respond or whether to respond to the lecture
below.

Thanks,

David J

David,

Just for your general fund of information, Kylix is a commerical application
as well. I really don't understand the criteria you folks apply. Looking at
the 2003 schedule, I can see presentations by IBM, and Intel. The March 2004
session was on Sun's Java Desktop. Since my software runs on Linux w/
PostgreSQL, it should be at least as relevant as Linux running on IBM
hardware.

As far as a sponsorship goes, you don't have much of an understanding how
the industry works. Sponsors expect something in return, namely the ability
to demonstrate their software to a captive audience. To me, a sponsorship
falls under the heading of advertising. Say I "sponsor" by picking up the
tab for pizza. I spend around $100. Using Google Ads, I can get 2-300
visitors to my web site. If the extent of my "sponsorship" is a mention, and
a link on the web site it's not very effective is it? If on the other hand,
I can demonstrate my software to 40 people for an hour, then I can probably
get at least one sale to make up some of my time and expense.

At a deeper level, this demonstrates why commercial vendors don't want to
port their applications to Linux. When the whole community has a purist
attitude why bother? Take a look at my niche. Calendar software. Most of the
stuff out their totally sucks. What doesn't suck has really bad
documentation, and no support. Some of the stuff is just broken, and when
you point it out, they say things like: "We have no intention of fixing this
broken item unless you want to donate the code...", which in my mind equates
to "We looked at it, and it would be pretty hard, and no one feels like
fixing it".

Anyhow, I'm not going to go into a major "Stallman is a nutcase" tirade,
other than to say for someone who has never existed outside of academia, he
has some pretty advanced ideas on business. I'd love to see him put them in
action.

George,

Thanks for responding. It looks to me as though your calendar program is a
commercial app. The CLUE policy is to restrict presentations to Linux or
open source topics. If you have any ideas for presentations along these
lines, we would certainly be interested.

We also welcome commercial sponsors. If interested, please contact Doug
Corwine; follow his link at http://clue.denver.co.us/sponsors.html

Thanks for your interest,

David,

As much as I like Kylix, I think that Borland has written it off. There have
been no upgrades or announcements for over two years now.

If you want, I have a web calendar app that I can show off. The URL below
links to it.

George,

I am the new speaker coordinator for CLUE, Colorado Linux Users and
Enthusiasts. Your name came in connection with Kylix (have I got that
right?) as a possible speaker at some future meeting.

Please let me know whether you would be willing to give a presentation and
your topic. We have open dates beginning with the August 10 meeting.
Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of every month, beginning at 6:30
p.m. at the Radisson Southeast Denver.

Thank you.
