Sure, and I think it makes sense to keep the "in-kind" (whether for
hosting or advice) sponsors on that list. Time of our volunteers is
often more valuable than all the cash provided by the "sponsors." I'm
not sure I get how relying on sponsors is a "catch 22" vs. relying on
donations from members or relying on some other solution (what are the
other solutions, by the way?).

Perhaps a mixed approach is best - make an appeal for donations from
the general list and also put someone in charge of contacting
companies with a sponsor package.  I am willing to be in charge of
asking for sponsorships, btw.  My credentials are that I did that for
DrupalCamp Colorado 2008 (a 100 person event held last summer). Though
most of you don't know me so I can understand if I wouldn't be trusted
to completely be in that role.
