_tonight_, or the reason for having caucuses...in general?

If your question is the later, then....

The purpose for party caucuses to to select delegates for county 
and state assemblies, who will then pick the candidates that 
appear on primary election ballots.

These are party caucuses, and thus I assume you would have to have 
a declared party affiliation in order to participate.  That has always 
been the main advantage to declaring onself a member of one of the
two majority parties...you have some say in who the candidates are, 
rather than being forced to choose the lesser of two evils on Election 
Day.
