Thanks for the input...if things go on long enough without a job, I
certainly will vote with my feet. I'm sure Nebraska has a lower cost of
living than Denver/Boulder, right?

For others who are laid off, I thought I'd pass along what someone
(re)posted on itsamaritans. I must admit the only promising contact (it
didn't pan out, at least not yet) I made was one that was a referral from
someone I've worked with in the past. Everything else feels more like the
state lottery. :)

Dear longneters

I sent the following out as an encouragement to
someone who had posted on the denverjobsearch listing
and I wanted to share it with you folks.

Folks

It is tough out there! I have been out of the high
tech workforce since July of 2001. I and my wife are
working at Home Depot to try to keep most of the bills
paid and food on the table.

A word of advise, get you body out there in public
away from the glow of your computer, get yourself in
front of people and be friendly! I ran into a guy at
a Dennys while I was on my 9:00 lunch break who got me
an interview. I commented about his flat top (I have
one too) and we started talking about where he could
find a local barber since he was just moving into the
area.

It looks like the interview may turn into something!
So I encourage you to get out! Go to Dennys, your
Church or place of worship, the grocery store, the
local watering hole of people from the companies that
could hire you, and other places.

Work on showing off your people skills. I have no
doubt about your technical skills, but managers want
to hire people who can present themselves and their
ideas well.

I get a lot of cudos at Home Depot because I help
engineer solutions for people in their homes. Working
in public places to just pay the bills helps you
interact with other people and leads to some
additional connections.

You are not going to get a job thru submitting resumes
over the internet. If you do not have a person taking
your resume and placing it in someone's hands, then
your chances of getting that advertised position are
very slim. Personal referal will get you that job, so
get out there in person.

And not to come off as too religious, but pray. Ask
the good lord what you need to do to help out in this
world, then get on with it.

My blessing I send to you all in your endeavors.

Dennis

PS: Remember this one verse from the bible

I know the plans that I have for you declares the
Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans
to give you a hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11
(NIV)

For years a secret shame destroyed my peace--I'd not read Eliot, Auden or
MacNiece. But now I think a thought that brings me hope: Neither had Chaucer,
Shakespeare, Milton, Pope.
