[CLUE-Talk] AOL in Negotiations to buy Redhat Linux ?????

I agree that it may not be a bad thing. There is a sizeable camp in the
linux community that wants a distro that lets non-computer-savy people
use linux (for better and for worse) as easily as they can windows. I can't
think of anyone who is better at dumbing something down than AOL.

I'm not entirely convinced this is a bad thing. If the GPL model works
the way it's suppose to, it shouldn't matter how evil the players are,
they are still forced to abide by the rules. Of course, there will
have to be a great deal of scrutiny by the community to make sure AOLTW
follows the rules. Having a powerhouse like that supporting Linux
would definatly help us make inroads on the home user desktop arena.
The biggest issue would be watching standards, and making sure they
remain open/non-proprietary. As was mentioned in an earlier thread,
the greatest way to sustain a monopoly is to produce everything in a
proprietary "standard" that no one else can use.
