For most positions, no. For a kernel hacker, it is probably low.

in this economy, it is what it is.
Also, this is almost certainly a trial to see if the hacker is worth a real
rate.

I was screwed by AIC many years ago (1997 ), but I did not know the story. I
was being paid 25/hr, and I was told that the billing rate was 40.
In addition, I was told that they did not receive overtime pay so I was to be
straightlined as well.

Later I found out the billing rate was 90/hour and they were receiving
overtime pay when most weeks I was putting in 60-80 hours. I was unimpressed
and will never work for companies such as them (i forget who the idiots are
now, but I will never go back to them).

If you are upfront and HONEST with the coder, you will ingratiate youself to
others and find that they will spread the word.

For most ppl here, the norm that the contracting firm takes is anywhere from
20-35 %. It will depend on who you are, how you negotiated, etc.

I am (worse, in fs and networking), but I am working in a start-up already.
Everybody else that I know who is worthwhile is working as well.
