It is actually depends on who you are targeting.
If you are going after silicon valley type business who are into Linux/OSS, 
then you are better off with a pdf/text.

If you are going after a company that is based on MS, a job recruiter at a 
standard place, or a large company (HP, Qwest, etc). then you are much better 
off with a word or rtf format. As patty pointed out earlier, there is 
software that the large companies use for parseing word format (including 
rtf) to suck the resume into a DB.
