This is oddly worded. If the story is really to be about cracking, then
why is it material that the person is a Linux user?

This construct makes sense (to me) only if the reporter is using the term
"hacker" correctly.

But if the reporter is truly interested in Linux, I'd assume the use of
"programmer", "developer", or "user" from a reporter, unless s/he is much
more technically savvy than, for example, Bill Husted.
