Linked clones has already been adequately explained. Movies are like record-my-desktop; everything that happens on-screen and on-mic is recorded. Unlike record-my-desktop, a VMWS movie records, even if the guest VM is rebooted or crashed while recording, because VMWS is doing the recording, not the guest VM.
