Each are a window manager.  A window manager controls the display of the 
windows and how the user interacts with it.  All of the window managers must 
use the X protocol to interact with your X server.  

The biggest difference amoung the various (dozens!) of X window managers is 
the software libraries that are used to build them.  In addition, KDE and 
GNOME are not just window managers (the window manager for KDE is a program 
called kwm, for example), but they have additional services (i.e., programs) 
that enhance your desktop experience -- e.g., cut-n-paste protocol.
