[CLUE-Tech] problems compiling the kernel

I'm running RH 7 with gcc 2.96. When I try compiling the kernel (I've
tried 2.16 & 2.17) I get the following messages:

checksum.S:231     badly punctuated parameter list in #define
checksum.S:237     badly punctuated parameter list in #define

Someone already suggested changing the Makefile hostcc from gcc to kgcc;
I still got the same error.

Any ideas?
