A possible reason for the blank screen (I have no idea about the Java
link) is that there is a RFC (822, I think) about encoding a message.  The
reader knows how to read them , so they appear to be instream text, even
though they are an attachment before you even get them.  When you forward
an attachment, of course it stays and attachment.  Attach a JPG to an
email and send it to yourself.  You should see the picture, but when you
forward it, the picture should go back to looking like an attachment.  Try
it out.
