Tim,

It was my understanding that the main reason from Linus for the change
was overall performance and simplification. The change caused quite a
few new problems before it fixed some of the older ones. (I saw quite a
few file system related problems with 2.4.10 and .12. I stayed at .9
until .15 was released. Everything was great after that. Moved to .16
with new installations)

In my readings of the Kernel traffic stuff, my (and it may be meager)
understanding was:

Linux tree
2.4.10 - Linus rips out Rik's stable VM in favor of Andrea's because of
performance, not stability, issues. File system problems all around.
Recommendation to revert to 2.4.9.
2.4.11 - The release that wasn't. (Even named "don't use")
2.4.12-14 - VM Cleanups and changes to stabilize the VM
2.4.15 - VM declared fixed and ready (integration of ext3 as well)
2.5.0 - Launch of 2.5.0 tree
2.4.15/2.5.0 - hand over of stable tree to Marcello
2.4.16 - Small changes
2.5.0-pre something - small changes

Alan Tree
2.4.10-ac - 2.4.14ac - Alan's changes as well as removal of the Andrea
VM and replacement with the Rik VM until Andrea's was considered stable
around 2.4.15

So, to answer your question, the new VM was to fix problems, but they
weren't "fixed" until around .15. I think.

    Dave,

Is that really how it was? I was under the impression that the new VM
fomr Andrea was there to *solve* the swapping problem of the earlir VM.
There was then controversy about this move by Linus -- some (Alan Cox
among them), didn't think it was right to rip out the VM
in the stable kernel branch. I'm sure there have been bugs in the new
VM, but *it* was the solution the problem, not cause.

    Or am I totally confused?
