Check in /etc/modules.conf It will tell you what modules char-major-8
really means. A little tip: It has to be compiled as a MODULE for this
to work. If it is compiled static into the kernel, it will
complain. This may be an item you don't care about (i.e. it is
complaining about the parallel port, but you have no printer and do not
care, so you left it off to make the kernel smaller) in which case you can
comment that line out.
