The major number is used by the kernel to talk to device drivers, the minor
is what specific device. If you do an 'ls -aFl' in /dev the numbers where
you'd normally see a filesize are Major, Minor numbers. E.g. 8,0 is sda (1st
physical scsi device) sda1=8,1 (first partition on sda) sdb=(2nd physical
scsi device) etc.... So why are you getting this message? Good queston.
The aic78xx loads and you can see it when you do an lsmod? If so, is there
an erroneous line in /etc/modules.conf (or conf.modules (depreciated)) that
you need to remove? Can you see your swap partition with 'cfdisk /dev/sda'?

I don't know if this helps but it might give you some pointers where to start
looking. :)
