Probably not a defective kernel.  The append stuff is RARELY needed for
disk geometry.  My "server" won't recognize anything bigger than 10G.  It
has 1 8, 1 40, and 1 45.  No troubles.  It boots from the 8, and BIOS
knows nothing about the other two.  Linux finds them anyway.  Does BIOS
correctly identify (size) the drive you are booting from?  If so, lie to
it, and tell it that this is the only drive, and take out the linear and
append stuff.  How do you get to the lilo conf to change it anyway if it
won't boot?   Boot from floppy?  BTW, you want it in the MBR unless you
are using another boot manager like boot magic or system commander.
