I've had very good results with an HP 2000C, which was their top of the
line inkjet from two years ago. It takes separate cartridges and can load
a double-sized black one. It also has separate ink heads. The only problem
with it is that the cartridges and heads are about $35 each, so the cost
over a year can be pretty steep if you do a lot of printing.

Another cheaper possibility is the HP 942/952 Inkjets, which run about
$250 (before rebates) and give photo-quality prints with the right paper.
One of them (I think the 952) is for the Mac, and may do Postscript.

If you want a cheap laser printer, I can recommend buying used ones from
Cummings and Associates at 3031 Blake in Denver (phone: 303/293-8100).
They advertise in the local rags such as Computer Week and occasionally
have very good deals. I bought a Laserjet 4 from them for $300 that
included the network card and Postscript card; it had about 12,000 pages
on it and, other than some stains on the case, was a steal. They have
other printers, including Laserjet II's and III's for as little as $50.
