[CLUE-Tech] Fwd: voluntary blackout [thought this was a neat idea]

RE: [CLUE-Tech] Fwd: voluntary blackout [thought this was a neat idea]The
politics, the stance, the advantages and disadvantages of each side of this
discussion... are entirely irrelevant.

This list is not for political discussions; it's for Linux, which is
arguably politics and/or religion of it's own. Nonetheless, real politics
and real religion, inasmuch an "other" side is defined and condemned, is
entirely inappropriate to this forum, until George W. starts actively
promoting Linux, or Linus Torvalds starts discussing his faith, or lack
thereof, and how it affects product design, or something like that there...
Politics and religion are NOT relevant to this list.

Now, unless you want a discussion of my faith in your inbox, please keep the
discussion of your politics out of mine. And no, I don't particularly care
what the stance is. Keep the politics off the Linux-list.

I'll even go so far as to say, "Post what you like, but start the
subject-line with 'OT:'" so the rest of us know that you're off on some
friggin' tangent...

Whoa, somebody needs to relax. While I agree that this post was not
necessarily appropriate for this mailing list, it is not going to upset me
seeing it here. As far as taking things for granted, that is exactly what
we do with everything. We take our technology for granted, but we also take
our environment for granted. I believe its a great idea for everybody to
take 3 hours out of their day to experience what its like to live without
electricity, especially if it allows them to see that there are other things
that can be just as fulfilling as watching tv or surfing the net. Just
because our economy depends on energy doesn't mean we shouldn't seek to
conserve it, and find alternative sources of it.

OK, this rubbed me the wrong way. Why is this even on the clue-tech
mailing list?

<FLAME>

This is inappropriate material for the clue-tech mailing list, and
furthermore is indicative of people who have not fully though through
the matter of how our economy depends on the availability of energy,
and how the federal government cannot make you use less energy any
more than they can force you to eat healthy food, exercise, or stay
out of debt.

I invite you to move to a third-world country where there are fewer
evil companies and corporations who exploit the Earth's resources.
And while you are going you should travel there using only home-made
and human-powered transportation. Don't pack your bags in any
suitcases made of metal or synthetic materials - use a burlap bag
or something.

Good luck getting clean water, good healthcare, food, and so forth
in your new country.

</FLAME>

Or perhaps were you taking your nice home, clean water, car(s),
roads, healthcare, and so forth for granted, even though the
technology and materials are brought to you by corporations who
exploit and "misuse" natural resources? And the fact that your
home is heated in the winter and perhaps cooled in the summer?

Make sure you are not taking a bunch of stuff for granted before
you make political statements of this nature in the future.
