I've been using VMWare for a few years, and I'm pretty happy with it.

I've used it to run various Linux distributions as well as Windows
under Linux. I haven't tried using Windows NT or 2000, but 98 ran
fine under VMWare and Linux runs great as well.

I'm using it right now on a machine with 512MB of RAM and a 1GHz
Athlon -- I can give the virtual machine 128 MB of RAM and I haven't
noticed any kind of slowdown. I've also tried it on an older Compaq
laptop with 192MB of RAM... it was a little sluggish, but not horrible.

I suppose it depends on what you're wanting it for -- it doesn't do
3D, for instance -- so there are some programs that will run on
Windows that won't run under VMWare. If you're wanting to run Windows
for Office or other business apps, it'll probably be fine.

Take care,
