I totally agree with with you I wasted two full days of my life just 
getting the permissions to stick on my "home" in Mandrake 8.2

As it turned out Red Hat 7.3 doesn't have the permissions problem issue, 
but it has so many other issues that Mandrake 8.2 is probably the better 
choice for most people.
