And, I still have the original, which looks the same expect there is only 
site that I configured during the initial setup menu via the debian installer.
Here is the only entry in that old file:

deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib

I've installed the matching libc6-dev package.  I'll see how that works out.
