Don't know if this helps, but I used to use the r* commands too, but
gave up trying to get them working with modern Linux distros. 
Eventually I found that using "rsync -e ssh" worked just as well for
remote copies.  Of course, so does "scp", the ssh version of rcp.  This
assumes you got ssh working.  On my local net (firewalled from the
outside world) I don't mess with configuring the .ssh files.  I just use
ordinary password authentication.

I'm not sure what the problem was with the r* commands, except everyone
kept telling me how insecure they were and I should be using the s*
commands now instead.  So I am.
