At CLUE North we talked a little about community wireless research going 
on at CU.  Here's the link:

Probably the most interesting part of the talk was about the Click 
Modular Router from MIT.  You can use that to build arbitrary network 
devices in software.  It has been used to implement ad-hoc routing 
protocols on Linux.
Sean LeBlanc has talked about some BSD software that can be used for 
bandwidth throttling to, e.g., simulate dialup connections for network 
testing.  Click can do the same for Linux.
