[CLUE-Tech] X on Woody

I'm trying to get X configured in Woody, and the first problem I ran into
was that the mouse is not being detected, and that I should edit the config
file to set it manually. Well, I tried that, and no dice.

So, I thought I'd back up and try to get gpm working first. I installed gpm,
and I get mouse support. Well, sorta. I can see the cursor sort of flash
around the upper right corner, and occasionally the entire top line of the
console gets highlighted. Okay, so I thought I'd circumvent my KVM, and hook
up another mouse (very similar model to the first: Logitech Trackman
Marble+, the first one is a Logitech Trackman Marble Wheel; they look
exactly the same, so I'm not sure why the name change. I suspect marketing.)
directly to the PS/2 port. Now gpm works. But X doesn't really do anything,
even though I kill gpm before starting X.

X opens up and I have the black and white background, with no cursor. So now
I have to ask: is XFree86 -configure the usual way to set up X on Debian?
Maybe my video card is just so old and/or crappy that I need to do something
special? At one point, I did have RH on this box, so I know it should work.

Another question: how do I turn off gpm/xdm trying to launch at
startup? Until I get this working, there is little point in that trying to
launch. :) I checked /etc/inittab, and it didn't look like it's set there.

FWIW, the video board is detected as an S3 864 by XFree86 -configure.
