Looks like Sylpheed sends by connecting to your smtp port, while Mutt 
invokes exim itself.  There may be a way to adjust the command line Mutt 
uses, or a way to adjust the exim config (though I'd be surprised if 
exim handles the two differently).

For Mutt messages, does anything show up in the exim log?  If not, Mutt 
isn't doing the right thing.  If so, that may help you figure out what 
exim is doing with them.
