I assume that by "transmitting" you mean over a network.  There was a 
company that planned to put huge disk banks under a mountain and do all 
the backups via network (was it Iron Mountain?)  They couldn't because 
they couldn't get enough bandwidth into the place.  "Never underestimate 
the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes."

But in some cases it would be a reasonable solution.
