Greg,

You could use a 'private' IM system in a company intranet.  You could also do 
what some firms on Wall Street have done - which is allow customers to IM 
their brokers with trade orders.

Where I work, we are under SEC and Sarbanes-Oxley regulations.  So, there is 
literally a legal requirement for data security - including any type of 
messaging - IM, email, blogging, etc.
