We copied the /sbin/init from knoppix, which got it to boot (with some
errors) and then we ran a 'apt-get dist-upgrade' and reinstalled the
proper sysvinit package. That seemed to clear everything up. 
No idea how sysvinit got uninstalled or messed up in the first place
tho. ;)
