[clue-tech] KDE login freeze

CLUEmeisters, need some help re where to look for help.

Not sure what the heck happened but am having sudden problems with my laptop freezing solid trying to login to a KDE session from the KDM login screen although once in a while it reboots the machine instead. On the other hand, if I do init 3 and then startx, all is well.

I followed the following advice that I managed to google up (courtesy of wiki.kde.org). Towit, I created a new user and the KDE login works fine for that lucky sap. So am assuming the trouble might lie somewhere within my ~/.kde?

I followed the further advice of exiting X altogether and then deleting:
~/.DCOPserver-*
/tmp/k*<user>
/var/tmp/<similar>
~/.kde/socket-<hostname>
~/.kde/tmp-<hostname>
and generally anything else I found that mentioned my username. No luck. Still freezing. Didn't find anything related on bugs.kde.org. Couldn't get onto the CLUE server to search and am wondering if anyone knows of a source for the detailed workings of KDM.

It's apparently not just KDE because I get the same freeze trying to start the other window manager sessions as well. I found kdmrc but don't know what to do with it without some more documentation. I read the XDMCP Howto but couldn't see anything that looked helpful (of course it would help if I could understand it better). :-)

Pointers?

Thanks,
Mike Farnsworth
