Most are just clerks.  If your Best Buy has a Geeksquad section, you may find someone competent, but then again those manning the desk tend to be CSRs for setting up appointments or signing in your hardware for repair and not the actual techs.

As a related side note, I was helping my boss with his home network this weekend.  A firmware update wiped the settings for his router.  In any case, we called Verizon DSL to get the configuration settings (since any record of it was misplaced), and I ended up dealing with one of the most competent techs I had the pleasure of working with over the phone.  A rare breed but they're out there.

I went out and bought aftermarket antenna's from Radio Shack ($30) that added 7DBi to the output. So far that seems to hav done the trick. The went right onto my Linksys WRT54G just fine. Instead of the upstairs PC barely getting any reception (when it could see it), now it's reporting %56+ reception rate. (Knock on wood) This did the trick!


Just as a side note , Worst Buy (Best Buy) doesn't even cary such items, they only will sell you the routers and nic's, and the two guys I talked to there about what I needed and why seemed so totally clueless (no pun intended) - but I've found that with most Best Buy folks - don't know jack about what they are selling.

My experience is that I've notice a huge difference based on building

materials.  With a new (aka: cheap, big builder construction) home I've
been able to cover 3 levels and 3500+ sq ft using 1 AP without any
issues..  On an older home with foil backed wall insulation I've had to

use 3 APs running WDS to cover even less sq ft..

If you run a custom firmware you can often turn up your signal output,
but the better solution is to get some of the aftermarket extended range
antenna.
