Linux doesn't use the BIOS or have such a limit.  So if you booted off a CD you'd be able to use a 
larger hard drive I think.  You might only need GRUB on the CD, or at most the kernel/initrd.

Or if you have USB et. al. booting off a small drive would allow you to use a bigger one.
