Will there be problems if you give them the same SSID?  

I flashed my two routers with Tomato.  It works great.  Mine are running
in some sort of bridged mode, so I do use the same id.  It lets me
connect two wired networks into one network.  There is a performance
penalty but since the other wired portion is just printers, it's not a
concern for me.  In your case, I'm not sure that a repeater will help,
since everyone  is in the same room.  Two independent subnets seems more
efficient.
