Hi Dave,

You mention that you are seeing behavior that you recall from having
Samba 2.x in place. Are you sure that your restore didn't mix any
chocolate and peanut butter? This is a shot in the dark question
to make sure you that you are not dealing with some mutant
hybrid system :) I remember being on a similar list years ago when
it was finally discovered that a man was seeking help with what became 
coined a SlackHatRedWare system:) In general, Things like ldd or reverse package lookups on the subsystem components might help determine this
(or time stamps ...?) Do you have a means of confirming restore integrity?
