[clue] Gnome 3

I don't think this is a paradigm shift. The GUI was a paradigm shift. This is more like change for change's sake, without examining the advantages of the old method and seeing if the new method improves anything. So far, the answer seems to be no.

New technology takes about 50 years to mature. Computers are at that point. Afterwards, you just get small refinements. Sometimes another new technology adds additional refinements. The rest is just fashion statements.

No doubt, my main thinking though, is paradigm shifts are never easy. It took me YEARS to get used to linux, I must've unofficially "tried" it at least 5 or 6 times before I got good with it. Emacs was even crazier. That took a dedicated effort of will to learn. I'm curious if Unity/Gnome3 fit into the same category or if it's basically a question of the costs exceeding the benefits.

I'm going to keep playing with it for now. Maybe I'll change shells later. But it's not a great leap forward. More like two steps back. Maybe this is Gnome's equivalent of second system syndrome.

I'm really curious about Gnome shell. Looking forward to trying it, but I haven't figured out how to get it loaded and working on any of my boxes yet. Short of loading the fedora beta, which I had a fair amount of trouble getting to work. In advance of Ubuntu's adoption of Unity, I deserted them and am running Linux Mint, but seeing as how mint by and large uses the same repos as Ubuntu, I'm expecting it will be a while before I get a chance to try it.

Arch Linux has switched to Gnome 2, so I have it on my laptop now. It uses Gnome Shell instead of Ubuntu's Unity. My initial impression is that it is merely change for the sake of change instead of an actual improvement. Many people are going to hate it as passionately as others hate KDE 4.

I don't see any way to put icons or documents on the desktop. I sometimes like to put working documents on the desktop and I see no reason why someone should decide that I should not be able to do that.

The old menus are gone. The newer method takes more work. I'm probably going to rely more on Cairo Dock.

The old applets are gone. The new ones take up more room and there are a few bugs, such as not showing up in the same position after rebooting, even when they are supposed to be locked to one position.

Multiple desktops are gone. At least, I haven't found out how to make it work.

It also wants to use an accelerated graphics card or Gnome Shell will not run. The new Metacity window manager runs instead and its new look is very similar to Gnome Shell but doesn't have the same capabilities. My laptop has accelerated graphics but it wasn't turned on and I had to find out how to turn it on.

I can't change the screensaver. Before I could run xscreensaver or Gnome Screensaver. The only thing I can change is how long before it kicks in.

Hmm. I haven't found anything yet that I consider an improvement.
